About the album

Miin TriuwaI Am True

Improvisation, composition, language and culture meet, merge and influence each other. Under The Surface knows no boundaries. On their extraordinary third album, the group reflects on their own background and finds their own “folk”.

After the group’s first two completely free-improvisation albums, Under The Surface (2017) and Trinity(2019), both nominated for an Edison, the next step for Under The Surface is a fully composed album: Miin Triuwa.

Under The Surface was formed in 2015 and since then the band has enjoyed a great deal of international success. Drummer Joost Lijbaart recognized the group’s potential early on and organized more than 200 concerts in 25 countries on 4 continents: from Africa to South America, Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Inspired by their many travels and the cultures they encountered, the group developed a unique improvisation language that combines jazz, folk, ethnic and electronic music.

With Miin Triuwa, Under The Surface embarks on a new musical journey with compositions by guitarist Bram Stadhouders. He wrote a suite of eight pieces in which the characters and qualities of the band members are transcendent. The constantly changing improvisations that are so characteristic of the band are now captured in a powerful musical statement that showcases what the band stands for. Instead of traveling to other worlds, in this project the group looks inward and explores how their own roots influence their music.

Under The Surface has a common drive to find the universal essence of different cultures. Thus, for this album the connection was made with the band’s own “forgotten” language, Old Dutch.
With the help of historical linguist Peter-Alexander Kerkhof and the Dutch Language Institute, Sanne Rambags carried out research and wrote beautiful lyrics for the album in Old Dutch. This is the language that was spoken in the Netherlands from circa 600 to 1150 CE and sounds similar to Gaelic and Icelandic. Below is a short excerpt from Track 3, “Fear and Trembling,” from the album Miin Triuwa.

gihori gibet miin endi ni varwerp beda miina, githenki miin
herta miin gidruovit is an mii, endi vrohta duodes viel over mii
vrohta endi bivunga quamon over mii, bithekoda mii thimsternissi
endi ik quath wie sal gevan mii vetheron also duvon, ik vliugan sal

English translation:
Hear my prayers and deny not my pleas, think of me
my heart has moved within me and the fear of death has captured me
fear and trembling have come upon me and darkness shrouds me
and I say, who shall give me feathers like those of a dove and let me fly?
The group recorded a music video of the album’s title track, “Miin Triuwa”, in Ukraine in October 2021.

Sanne Rambags – vocals and lyrics
Bram Stadhouders – guitar and compositions
Joost Lijbaart – drums and organization
Ted Masseurs – recording and mixing

For the Dutch tour, two additional band members will join the band.
Lennart Heyndels – double bass, bass guitar, vocals
Annabel Laura – guitar, lyre, keyboards, percussion, vocals

Under The Surface kennt keine Grenzen.

Album in Altniederländisch.

gihori gibet miin endi ni varwerp beda miina, githenki miin
herta miin gidruovit is an mii, endi vrohta duodes viel über mii
vrohta endi bivunga quamon over mii, bithekoda mii thimsternissi

Besides jazz, pop and improvised music he worked with modern classical music and dance. In 1990 he performed with students from the National Ballet Academy, played modern classical percussion music from Xenakis, Cage, Reich and worked in different projects with Theo Loevendie and Louis Andriessen.
He formed with Yuri Honing the Yuri Honing Trio in 1989. With this group he did concerts and tours in more than 60 countries all over the world. During a tour in the Middle East in 1998 the trio was introduced to the music of the Arab world. The result was a bigger group called Orient Express with a Libanese singer and two musicians from Iraq. This group did several tours in the Middle East and the Netherlands. In 1993 he won the 15th Europe Jazz Contest with the Nicolas Thys trio. For this performance he received the “best drummer award”. In 1995 he joined the Michiel Borstlap sextet with Yuri Honing, Eric Vloeimans and Benjamin Herman. With this group they released the double CD the sextet live in 1996 and did several tours in the Netherlands. A tour in China in 1998 was filmed by Dutch documentary maker Jop Pannekoek.
From 1995 he works also with Agog a trio with guitar player Frank Wingold and bassguitar player Mark Haanstra.
With this group Lijbaart won in 2002 the Dutch jazz competition and was awarded as best soloist from the contest by American drummer Elvin Jones. From 2002 Joost started his own quartet “group of friends” with Yuri Honing, Benjamin Herman and Mats Eilertsen. For this group he is also very active as a composer. He played on the North sea jazz festival with this band in 2003. A DVD of this concert was released in 2005.
Another new group is the duo with piano player Wolfert Brederode. A CD of this group will come out in Autumn 2006. With the duo they did a project with dancer and choreographer Lonneke van Leth. Also they played music on the spoken book Shadowchild from Dutch writer Frans Thomese.
This year Joost’s main groups are the Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet and Wired Paradise, an exciting electro/rock group with Yuri Honing.

Bram Stadhouders (guitar)

Not long after, he received carte blanche from the BIMhuis, for which he wrote the successful Cantata for tenor voice, guitar and live electronics.  Bram's playing is influenced by (natural) landscapes, visual arts, ambient and global music, always exploring the boundary between improvisation and composition. ... Under The Surface fearlessly practices their own individual ideas without pandering to any trend, no folk, no jazz, no pop, no ambient, everything is in here, repackaged and reworked into something new and fascinating, with an incredible expansiveness and spaciousness that simultaneously tempts you to take off and also keeps you grounded, a sonic journey between worlds.

By contrast, the music on Miin Triuwa—written by Stadhouders—follows a through-composed path, though improvisation remains a key component. Martial drums and a harmonium-drone course through "Bure Thii Northwint," a stirring anthem that evokes the more progressive edge of Irish folk legends Clannad.
